Molloy College, already home to the nation’s sixth largest nursing program, is upping the ante. Beginning this fall, the Rockville Centre-based school will offer a nursing doctoral program, its first Ph.D degree.

The program, in the works for five years, is designed to prepare nurses for leadership roles in academia, health policy, administration and clinical practice. The curriculum will focus on theory, research, methodology and the humanities. Students will be required to complete 45 credits of coursework and a dissertation.

Founded in 1955, the independent Catholic college serves a student population of about 4,000 studying liberal arts, the social and natural sciences, business, education, social work, speech and music therapy and, of course, nursing.
