    G-tubes and j-tubes

OK, let's talk about the dang things. What do you like about 'em, what do you hate about them?

Any useful tricks you want to share?

    I await your posts!

I always seem to spill fluid when bolus feeding... I like J tubes better than g tubes. But I was taught with J tubes you don't have to aspirate to check for residual unlike the g tube. but all nurses do it, so, I do it too. Point is jejunum right, not a gastric pouch. ?

Mickeys are great. I have to question bolusing, though.

G-tubes are the best because they are the largest hence more able to take the variety of junk getting put through them. Jtubes are tricky because they have the smallest bore as are Dobhoff tubes. Both Dobhoffs and Jtubes will rarely aspirate because they are in the distal duodenum or jejunum and Dobhoffs will collapse under negative pressure anyway. As for spills, they are almost unavoidable although thanks to the Lopez valve, they are less frequent. I always place a chux under the access site to contain drips and spills. Speaking of Lopez valves, I have 2 recommendations; 1- make the port in the stopcock a little bigger because the solutions are a lot more viscous than IV fluids and 2- place a silicone ring on the end of the cath tip syringe port which will help keep it in place when in use. I personally would kill many fewer chux. I have never used a "Mickey"
