Two nursing professionals will become the first students to complete the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

OU officials say Kathleen Carter-Parker of Oklahoma City and Anna Nguyen of Yukon will receive their degrees at Saturday's convocation of the OU College of Nursing.

The College of Nursing's Ph.D. program began accepting students in 2008. The dissertations of Carter-Parker and Nguyen explored health challenges within their own ethnic communities.

Carter-Parker studied how intention, attitudes and cultural norms influenced physical activity among African American women, and Nguyen looked at problems among Vietnamese diabetics in managing their disease.

Carter-Parker is a nurse practitioner at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oklahoma City and Nguyen is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City.
