Africa: Nambia: First Lady Concerned About Nursing

April 18, 2005: Africa: Nambia: First Lady Concerned About Nursing Shortage:"Pohamba, a practising registered nurse, also encouraged the newly capped nurses and educators to be steadfast in service delivery of the highest standards. She continued: "I am particularly concerned about the shortage of nursing staff in hospitals and health centres throughout the country. As a professional registered nurse, I have first-hand experience. I know how it feels when our nursing staff work under pressure due to a shortage of personnel. However, the shortage of nurses is being addressed collectively by Unam and the Ministry of Health. It is a welcome effort and must be earnestly pursued so that we can prudently serve our nation."

Interesting question. You could find an answer by contacting the nursing board in the country of interest, or contact one of the international nursing volunteer organizations (Red Cross, etc) and find out what their nurses need.

Im just deciding to be a RN that travels and it has always been my dream to go to Africa. How does one begin to prepare theirself to go to Africa to work? Is it a difucult task or does it just require determination? I hope that the shortage of nurses in Africa doesnt last forever but hopefully one day I could work over there.

    Hi,

Not sure where you are from, but the Canadian Nurses Association has a great online product called Global Nursing Connections, it is a place where nurses who have worked overseas can write about their experiences in other countries and nurses wanting to work overseas can read what other nurses have experienced working all over the world. You should check it out. It will give you a good idea of the kinds of opportunities that are going on internationally. CNA - AIIC
