    Nursing Volunteer Organizations

For those with the time and inclination, these are non-profit organizations that can use your help.

Sheri Vail MN RN, Nursing Volunteer Opportunities in Developing Nations:"Hello! I've designed this web site for you - nurses, healthcare professionals and students interested in volunteer opportunities! Nursing Volunteer is a comprehensive web site where you will find lots of information! The site is meant to be a "jumping off" place for you - a beginning! I've simplified your search for volunteer opportunities by placing links to many organizations on this web site - you can target your specialty, i.e. "surgical" or review the entire web site. Please sign my guest book - by signing and reading the guest book you may find new friends - individuals that share your interest in volunteerism! You are also giving volunteer organizations that view this site the opportunity to know you; your specialty, countries you're interested in and your availabilities."

    National Organizations:

American Red Cross:"Every day, the American Red Cross helps people in emergencies . . . whether it's half a million disaster victims or one sick child who needs blood. Our vital work is made possible by people like you, who learn how good it can feel to lend a helping hand. Red Cross "everyday heroes" come from all walks of life. They're all ages. Everyone has something special to offer . . . Including you."

    International Organizations:

Blessed Gérard's Care Centre and Hospice:"The Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard is not a catholic organisation in name alone, but a community of the church, which executes its charitable service as a work of faith. Our work is essentially a fulfilment of the missionary task of the church, to proclaim the gospel in word and deed. The centre of our daily schedule is the celebration of Holy Mass as expression and execution of the redemptory service of the church. If somebody would be critical of or distant from the church and its missionary work, he or she would not feel comfortable in our community. If you can identify with our principles, you will find ample opportunities to have many wonderful experiences."

Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders or MSF):"Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders or MSF) delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation. MSF was founded in 1971 by a small group of French doctors who believed that all people have the right to medical care regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that the needs of these people supersede respect for national borders. It was the first non-governmental organization to both provide emergency medical assistance and publicly bear witness to the plight of the populations they served."

MEDICO, Inc:"Since its founding in 1990, MEDICO has provided basic services to people in need. Founders Lynda and Norm Peters, Jim Durham, and Marian and David Flowers experienced the joy of serving others and wanted to continue giving to those less fortunate. They created MEDICO, an independent organization not tied to a religious or government organization. Through the efforts of MEDICO, an expectant mother receives prenatal care, a little girl can walk normally after club foot surgery, a child obtains books and paper for classes. Since 1990, volunteers from all over the world have helped make this a reality for the people of Latin America."

    Nursing Volunteer Organizations

Thanks, I'd like to hear more.

I'm heading off to Bangkok next year to get a cert for teaching English to foreigners. It'd be nice to combine my nursing skills with that.

The problem that I have is: WHO is reputable? The world "over there" has become so full of scams it's unbelievable. It seems that all these "opportunities" cost.. Ok, perhaps that is reasonable but how about health insurance while over there, and who is really, really first class?

I'd love it if there was a permanent Discussion area on volunteers, perhaps some might even do some "joint volunteering" I think that would be fun.

    Btw, I'm RN, Occ-Med (Cohn-s2b) Ex Med/surg, ex-ICU (yahoo!)

I'd like to hear more of YOUR or someones real experiences with the mentioned entities.

Btw, sadly http://www.nursingvolunteer.com/ is defunct and being held "for sale."
