Re: In or out of Nursing?

I have been a nurse since 1997. I have worked in hospitals mainly ER/MS. I have done agency work (going hospital to hospital) for about 7 years. Now I am a nurse auditor. I got tired of the politics and administators not backing up the nurses. I miss it sometimes but I have had my nose broken once as well as been beaten up by patients not because I am a bad nurse but because of being short staffed and not having help and sufficient security where it is needed. Does anyone know of any other outside auditing companies that is hiring auditors for Texas?

What does a nurse auditor do? I bet it's a lot better than regular nursing. I am in Massachusetts, so I don't know anything about Texas. I hope you find what you're looking for. I just worked my last night in the nursing home and tomorrow I go for orientation at a hospital nearby. I'm very skeptical. I think that it will probably be the same old thing and they won't really care about me or listen to me. I'm seriously thinking about going into something totally different where I won't be under so much pressure and have less liability.

I have been battling getting out of nursing for a long time. I've hated nursing ever since I got out into the real world where administration only cares about the numbers (of course they don't teach that in clinical) Now I am trying to become an engineer. I feel that even the patients are getting ingrateful and sue-happy. Not to mention all the drug-seekers that call you every name in the book. I'm sick of nursing and I pity the nursing students I see coming in every morning.

if you are that sick of it then it may be time to move on. Even with the bitching I like nursing. There are things I Don't like about it but it's still better then other things I've done. I also try and teach the students various things they'll run into not just how to write a care plan.

Wait a minute! I am reading all of your replies to the original post and now I don't know how I feel anymore. I am graduating from nursing school this May and hope to begin working as an RN by July (yeah right with waiting on the NCLEX). Anyway, I love caring for patients in clinical but I do see the negativity from the hospital staff but, most of the time, it is THE OTHER NURSES! Nurses can be so negative and degrading to each other, it scares me to think that we are all in the same profession to help others. Please, let me know are the other nurses relationships what you are talking about?

Re: In or out of Nursing?

I really do like my job there are things I don't like about it but the good outweighs the bad. I have good friends at work who are also good friends outside of work. What I don't like:
The nurse who should retire (like her not her attitude) every day she gripes all day long about the patients just wanting pain medication,,she knows they are on drugs, they all have medical cards just want that welfare check for more kids, over and over and over it gets old. She is 67 but a hard worker just bitches all day...looks like Maxine from the cartoons.
One who is as wide as she is tall but starts everyday with how she's doing so much work, when is lunch, didn't get lunch ever in her life, directs others from the nurses station to go do this go do that, I didn't want to take that patient, will sit in that chair and ask to be handed everything instead of reaching over a foot to get it. She would give you anything she had though she's very generous just doesn't work well.
Couple come in late everyday. Report starts they should be there on time so I can go home I'm there in the morning on time so they can go home it's just rude to come in late everyday...not just once in a while because of a train, sick kid etc it's every day 5 minutes.
The unit I work is busy L&D we might not be sitting at the desk at shift change if we're in delivery, OR, recovery etc. Most of the oncoming staff comes to find out what's going on what do they need to do but there are also that couple that sit at the nurses station waiting for you to come give them report.
You know it doesn't matter if you are in nursing, a factory, a bank or McDonalds everyplace there will be the bitchers and moaners, the slowpokes that never can get finished, ones that can't get along with anybody. You just have to decide what's right for you.
I like my boss, the work, the co-workers for the majority and the things I do in my job.

No, the relationship with the other nurses is pretty good but like with all professions, there are some nurses that treat you like an idiot. I guess it makes them feel better about themselves. Right now, I have nursing burnout and I am stuck. I started at a job in a hospital and everyone thinks that it is such a great job. Maybe it is, but not for me. I just have to hang on for a few months so I can save some money and go to school to learn another profession. I think I'll go drive a truck so that I can make the same amount of money and not have so much responsibility. Good luck to you if you are graduating nursing school. I hope your job is very fulfulling to you. It's just not for me. I am just bouncing these things off of other people to get an idea as to what other people think and to help me get through the next few months.

i'm still in--i had written awhile back about how difficult i found finding a new job here in the states after experiencing burnout in a specialty and leaving for over a year to do volunteer nursing in peru'. i've been in a position to try a few things--sales in medical devices, community health and oncology--now i'm in icu with a preceptor. so much has changed! i haven't been in icu in years! some things haven't changed like various personalities one might encounter, or having to prioritize and organize one's time, and going home feeling like you should have done more for the patients. but, there are more machines, not to mention they are more complex, the computer system for taking off orders not the most user friendly, patients are sicker, so many disciplines are involved, there are more protocols, more documentation and of course all the new stuff regarding confidentiality. it seems there are more resources available for the nurse but not enough time to actually utilize them! maybe i feel this way because i haven't worked in a hospital for years? or is it because i worked where there was so very little, and while you never could give them all the advances medicine had to over, at the same time, you gave of yourself...so i say yes i'm in! i don't want to go back to school--i'm 50! so, i'll just do the best i can with what i have--trouble is there is so much--i just want to go home in the morning knowing i did the best i could for the patient.

Re: In or out of Nursing?

I've been a nurse and an entrepreneur for seven years. Regardless of what I make on the side, don't think I'll ever give up bedside nursing.

Went into it for the patient contact which I love. The other nonsense we deal with every day is just that, nonsense. I think if nurses spent a little less time bitching about their working conditions and co-workers, we'd see some real improvements.

It's a damn shame nurses have such a hard time sticking together.
