I first heard of it in 1991 and it is 2008.
Moreover, more knowledge that also adds another degree does not hurt.

This Debate has been ongoing since I graduated back in 1975. So far it is still a debate
More and more we are expected to have more education. I am not suprised at this what-so-ever.
Lol, I'm sure that one day in the future most nursing schools are going to be four years long. At the school I'm at (Univ Of Central Oklahoma) it used to be four semesters, now it's five. I'm not sure, but I think that OU's (Univ of Okla) is even longer than ours. I think their two year program (year-round) is the accelerated program.

Remember, the BSN schools need teachers, and with higher degrees. The schools don't always pay that well (tenure, etc.), thus the lack of teachers. So many of my teachers worked elsewhere to supplement the 'poor' salary they got teaching....
Very true Cat. I am working on a Post Master's Certificate in Nursing Ed (my MSN is in Clin Spec) and many of my classmates are planning on teaching in the acute care arena because the academic setting pays so poor. In fact according to one of my texts, despite needing an MSN to teach in an university program the pay is no better and sometimes worse than that of the publice school system. It is seems like a no-brainer to me since we need faculty desperately. Also there is a new certification for educators but here again despite implying excellence in clinical nursing education it does nothing for those who take it financially.

Most of my professors have their DNSc or equivelant, or working on them.
Things also boil down to the fact that Nursing has different hierarchies: LPN, ADN, BSN, etc. And, we have the PA's/MD's.....and we wonder why Health Care is in such a state of confusion?!
