ROE_Wedge, I know what you mean when you say "im there to do a task to the best of my ability" but there is more to it:

Since nursing school I have "pushed" the fact that registered nurses are "professionals". We must think like professionals and act like professionals. We must join and participate in professionals societies both local and national. As long as registered nurses see themselves as task oriented, blue collar hourly workers (including letting unions lead lead them) we will never achieve the status of lawyers, accountants, physicians and engineers. I am a college prepared licensed professional with graduate credentials as well. Military RN's are "officers" in the military and have promoted themselves to where they can even be in a commanding position over physicians. I am responsible for my own career and goals. Career not job. Thanks for listening.

I definitely agree with you Jim and thank you for the heads up. I am prior Air Force myself and i really respect the title of being a professional and i try to embrace that in every walk of my life. I agree with you that nurses should be seen as professionals and not just task doers. A lot of people in society have the wrong image or perception as to what a nurse really is and i do believe its important for nurses to display this level of professionalism.

By and large, I find my coworkers to be congenial and the workplace to be focused in a relatively "gender neutral" fashion. There are good places out there for male nurses. If you aren't in one, start looking because you deserve to be appreciated for the qualities that make you a good nurse. Being male adds a special quality that your patients and coworkers will appreciate when they get to know you.

I've been away for a time. Sorry for not replying to your kind words of encouragement.
I have been taking your advice even before reading it, the environment in my home town towards men who choose a carrear in nursing is; as you rightly guessed hostile, so, I have been searching far and wide for a place that is more accepting of men in our field. The responce so far is knocking my socks off. The only major snag is the time it takes to get endorsements to practice in other states. One would come to think breaking into Fort Knox easy in comparison and far less time consuming.
    FINGERPRINTS : CHECK
    LICENCE VARIFICATION : CHECK
    ENDORSEMENT LIST : CHECK
    YADDA: YADDA: YADDA : CHECK
    ETC,ETC---------- : CHECK
Each of these is an additional CHECK that has to be written for ::said dollar amount::
one word of advice to any and all students "When taking the NCLEX get endorsed in any and all states you think you may want to work in when you take the test"
Back to my first train of thought now.
A change of location seems to be what every other guy that graduated from the same program as I did has been forced to do, while most all of the girls seem to have found work in the local area (those that wanted to anyway).
I was foolhardy enough to believe that "I" would be different.
    Yea, what a joke.?
Anyhow, my family has been supper in it's saport of me and the struggles I encountered in my local job search. they will undoubtedly follow me to what ever end.
So to make a long story short stay out of Northeastern Michigan if you are a male in the field of nursing, but the rest of the world seems to love us.

Hey orionseal, with american automakers going down the tubes maybe a lot of those blue collar wrench turners need to change their attitudes and look into healthcare now? :39: Just a thought. :luck:

    Hey Orion,

Thanks for the reply. I've come to realize that there are regions where sexrole stereotypes will prevail over enlightened thinking no matter what. It's kind of sad that the attitude is bad enough where you are that you have to leave your home just to escape the judgement. Good luck with that, man. On the matter of all of the hoop jumping you're doing, welcome to the legalities of medicine and licensure. Don't let any those licenses lapse until you're sure you about which ones you won't ever use. It's much easier to keep them current than to reactivate them- talk about hoop jumping. I did that myself until my state of residence entered into a reciprocity agreement with the state in which I work. Keep your chin up and stay in touch.

Maby; maby not, the big question is with the steriotypical autoworkers rate of pay versus the amount of work they actualy do they might be abble to apply one or possably two bandaids to a shift; that is if they got some overtime for it.
We have a local plant here that the union just went on strike and basicly shut the place down. Sabitage and chasing away vendors and suppliers just is not the way to keep a job. The owners were forced to go bankrupt. :hung:

My first question is why strike when you have a job for $20.00 an hour (and most of those guys never graduated from highschool)?:2confused:

My second question is would you want these guys working on you in the E.R. especialy if they were busy and haddn't been allowed a coffee break?

Thanks for the words of encouragement as well as the advice it seems to be the prudent trend (maintaining multiple state endorsments). I'll keep in touch. :meditate:
