University of Utah Hospital Named One Of America's Best For 13th Time

SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah Hospital, for the 13th time, has been named one of America's best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.

In its 17th survey of U.S. hospitals, the magazine ranked University Hospital No. 22 in the country in gynecology, No. 26 in orthopedics, and No. 34 in cancer care.

Only 176 of the country's more than 6,000 hospitals met the criteria for selection on this year's list, according to the magazine. To make the list, hospitals had to meet one of three standards: affiliation with a medical school, membership in the Council of Teaching Hospitals, or provide at least nine of 18 key technologies. Hospitals also had to perform a minimum number of procedures in specialty areas.

After meeting these standards, hospitals received a numerical score based on their reputation, mortality rate, and other factors, such as nurse-to-patient ratio and patient services. The top 50 hospitals in 16 specialties were then ranked according to their numerical scores.
