Trustees change school name

New name for CoxHealth: Trustees change school’s name to Cox College | News-Leader.com | Springfield News-Leader

It’s official: Cox College is the new name for CoxHealth’s nursing and health careers school.

The Board of Trustees of Lester L. Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences recently approved the change.

The name change was designed to eliminate some of the confusion regarding the name of the college and its purpose, according to Cox College President Anne Brett.

“The name change reflects a clear, easily identified brand name for the college as we continue to grow to meet the health care workforce needs of the community,” Brett said in a news release.

“We are much more than a nursing school and the name Cox College conjures a larger image,” she said.

Cox College currently offers four nursing programs: Associate of Science in Nursing, or ASN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or BSN, Accelerated BSN program for individuals with degrees in other fields and an RN to BSN program.

Health sciences offerings include an associate of science medical assisting degree program, certificate programs in medical transcription and medical billing/coding, and a dietetic internship.

Cox College began as Burge School of Nursing in 1906. Lester L. Cox recognized the importance of training nurses and was instrumental in changing the Burge School of Nursing from a diploma program to a degree-granting institution, according to a Cox news release.

In 1994, Burge School of Nursing became Lester L. Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences to honor his memory.
