Donation to fund Newman nursing scholarship

Newman University recently received a more than $1 million gift that will be used to fund an endowed scholarship for nursing, the university announced last week.

The first $750,000 installment, which will be paid for from the estate of the late Lucy Heinz, already has been received, Newman says. The remainder is expected to be received by the end of the year following the finalization of Heinz’s estate.

The university says the funds will benefit the nursing program and make it possible for the university to help fight the nursing shortage in Kansas and across the United States.

“This is coming to Newman at a very good time,” said Bernadette Fetterolf, director of Newman’s School of Nursing and Allied Health, in a written statement. “With the growing nursing shortage and the plight of many small private colleges, to receive this money now is a blessing. We’re very grateful for it.”

Newman says Heinz, a native of Ellinwood, Kan., chose the university for the endowment because of its Catholic affiliation, and in the hope students from Ellinwood and the surrounding area might receive scholarships and return to work there after receiving their degrees.

The scholarship guidelines stipulate that qualifying students from Barton County will be given first preference.
