CLC, NIU form degree partnership

A new partnership between the College of Lake County and Northern Illinois University will soon allow students to complete a bachelor's degree in nursing in Lake County.

Earning a bachelor's degree opens up opportunities for advancement for nurses in such areas as nursing administration and health care management. The program will be offered starting in the fall 2009 semester, and the first students admitted to the program are scheduled to finish their degrees in spring 2011.

The bachelor's degree in nursing will be awarded by NIU. Under the new option, students must already be registered nurses upon admission to the program.

They will receive 32 semester hours of credit for previous nursing course work taken at CLC or another institution, and they will take another 24 semester hours in face-to-face nursing courses offered by NIU at the University Center of Lake County in Grayslake. Students may complete the additional general education credit hours required for the bachelor's degree at CLC or another accredited college or university, before, after or while taking the NIU course work.

Fully-qualified current and former CLC students will have preference for admission for half of the program slots and will be based at the University Center of Lake County.
