The Queen’s Medical Center, Hawaii’s largest acute-care hospital, has earned the highest honor for nursing and hospital excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Queen’s achieved the credentialing center’s “magnet” status, which is the highest designation hospitals can attain for quality patient care, nursing excellence, employee satisfaction and job retention.

Queen’s is the first Hawaii hospital to earn the designation, which involves a rigorous application and review process that includes site visits.

Only 324 health-care organizations in 43 states and the District of Columbia — which is less than five percent of the nation’s hospitals — have “magnet” status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

“The Queen’s Medical Center is honored and humbled to receive this very prestigious national award,” said President and CEO Art Ushijima in a prepared statement on Monday. “It is a testament to the solid commitment our entire team has made to strive for the very highest standards of excellence for the people of Hawaii.”

The American Nurses Credentialing Center, which is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, describes itself as the world’s largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization.
