Smile Who I am

Hello. My name is shannon and I am about to finish my first semester of my senior year, so I only have one more semester to go. YEAHHHHH! I never thought I would make it through this semester, I have been so stressed out, but I did make it and so far I have a B in one class and am borderline A/B in my others. Anyways, I found this site because I did a google search about army nursing. I plan on commissioning as a army nurse when I graduate in December, and I wanted to get some advice about how the process occurs of being commissioned as a nurse in the army nurse corp. Any other advice people have for me would be welcomed.THANK YOU!

Hi, shannon! Nice to meet you! :waving: MagRed, another Moderator, is in the Army; I am sure he'd be able to tell you a few things when he can. Right now, he's a nurse 'in the Sand Box', so give him some time.

Good luck in school and with Boards, and drop by often.

Re: Who I am

Shannon and to the other members of this thread,
Let me introduce myself, I am an Army Nurse. I have been one for 8 years now. I have been in the Army for 20 years this July. The first 12 I was on Tanks. Currently my job is that of a Medical Recruiter.
The process of getting into the Army Nurse Corps is pretty simple.
1. Meet with the recruiter and decide what you want and how it fits into the ANC.
2. Take a physical and begin gathering needed information for your application.
3. Send you COMPLETED Application up to Health Services Directorate for approval. Yes, there is a board you have to pass to be accepted.
4. Finish School, Pass your NCLEX, Do great and wonderful acts for the world.
I am always available for questions. And yes I found this site when I was Googling for cool nursing quotes to use in my presentations.

Re: Who I am

CLC19K30 or to anyone else that can answer my question,
Thanks for the advice. I met yesterday with a medical recruiter for the ANC. After meeting with him, what I was planning on doing is to do my next semster's preceptorship at one of the two army hopsitals that is close to me. I am planning on starting the paperwork process while I am doing the preceptorship, after I get a better idea of what all is involved with the ANC. He explained to me like you were saying that I really can't start any training until I pass the NCLEX and take the state boards where I live at. I guess one of my questions at this time is how long does the process take after I submit my paperwork to the army. He explained to me like you were saying that the appointment goes before a board, and it also goes before congress (WOW!).Most nurses I know took about a month or so to prepare for the NCLEX. If it takes longer for me to finish school and take my NCLEX than it goes to get the appointment what happens? Would you have any other suggestions for what I should do? Thank You so much!

Re: Who I am

Hello Shannon,

Just curious, it is great that you want to be a military nurse, go into the armed forces.

1. Are you worried at about being sent to Iraq or some other god awful place and getting killed over a senseless war initiated by Bush or some other idiot in power?

2. Do you think it might be better to work in a stateside hospital for a year to two years first, get comfortable with nursing, solidify your skills, decide what kind of nursing appeals to you, before you commit years of your life to the military?

3. Do you think your recruiter is going to tell you anything, everything he can to get you to enlist, BUT what you don't want to hear? I'd take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

Just food for thought.

Re: Who I am

Andrew - have you ever served in the military?

If not, I'll tell you right now, I take great offense at the remarks you've made about our military and the President!!!

I'm a former U.S. Marine who proudly served this beloved country with 2 tours in 'Nam, just so people like you would have the freedom to run your mouth.

The least you can do is keep your personal opinions to yourself; especially about the men and women who have more spine and gonads than you do, by signing up and serving this country -- if you don't like it here, I understand there's plenty of room "down South"!

Re: Who I am

I'm not a veteran.

The derogatory remarks are made towards Military Recruiters & President Bush and this new Vietnam he's gotten us involved in. Are recruiters are exceptionally honest and forthcoming in your experience?

Our fellow citizens and kids are being sent into harm's way and I disagree with it where Iraq is concerned.

I commend, not criticise them for going, enlisting. They're serving their country and making the ultimate sacrifice every day. They have no say on where they are sent.

Shannon is considering going into the military and is quite enthusiastic. I'd prefer she goes in with her eyes open.

I'd strongly caution any woman (nurses-already perceived sex objects) from considering the armed forces based on existing problems with sexual harassment and rape which has been rampant for decades.

Scandal Bigger than Walter Reed
The Rape, Assault and Harassment of Women in the Military:"Women are facing widespread sexual harassment and even rape by their male comrades in the military. The threat of sexual violence against female soldiers by their male colleagues is so great that women are warned not to go out to the bathroom alone at night. This has led women to stop drinking fluids at 3:00 in the afternoon and has even led to deaths due to dehydration."

I can accept you're angry that I don't agree with Bush and Iraq. You're entirely entitled to your opinion in that respect.

Sincerely,

You'd do well not to defame the Marines either. My son served proudly for 9 years. He's been out for 2. The greatest thing he ever said was. "If I have to defend this country I will. But I will defend it for freedom and nothing else. Yes, Mom, your freedom to be a pacifist."

Either you fought for ALL of us or you fought in vain.

I grew up in the 60's and I DO remember it. And I also remember how you vets were treated by YOUR government when you returned.
In light of some recent developments I don't see these young men and women who are defending us again getting much better treatment. DO YOU? Up until recently the unloading of their flag drapped coffins was not allowed on the nightly news. Do you think that is our government honoring it's fallen soldiers and Marines?

And it's a sad commentary when their names have to be read long after many Americans have gone to bed at night.

Don't jump your fellow Americans. If we had been able to vote on this conflict I bet we wouldn't be having this debate today.

We can and should comment on and disagree with our government. That doesn't show disrespct for our soldiers or Marines. Just the opposite. I believe it tells them that we do care. We do care that they live to see another day, get married, and raise their own children in peace. Bush doesn't care. His girls aren't serving now are they? He doesn't understand the common working American with kids over there. Don't tell us who doesn't understand and who does.

Do you really think the people who were responsible for 9/11 are hurting? Do you really think the women and children being killed daily in Iraq, unable to work, or get an education deserve that? What did they do to us? Do you really think an eye for an eye solves anything? All you have left are angry blind people.

If your house is broken into do you run all over the country looking for the culprit or do you stay home and defend your home better. Do you see the divide and conquer strategy the terrorist are using here. We've put troops all over the world. Who's defending this country? They are laughing at us. We've lost several allies here. And soon to lose Britian. For what? I don't feel the least bit more secure than I did on 9/12. Maybe less even.

And what's up with the 'down South" comment. Isn't Texas in the Southern part of this country?

Thanks for fighting for ALL of my freedoms as an American.
