Hello,

I found this site by browsing. I am VERY impressed by it and I am hopeful I will get some advice, encouragement, etc. I am about to enter an LPN program at a local community college. I am nervous and afraid of what my future holds for me. The reason why is....I am a convicted felon since 9/05. I am trying to turn my life around and so far it's been good. I am currently on probation with about another year to go. I was convicted of forgery/uttering a forged instrument/grand theft...Ouch that hurt to say. Anyway, I was in Florida at the time and lost my CNA status. My licence was revoked and I surrendered it. Nursing has always been my passion and I spoke to the nursing director at my future college and told her the whole ugly story. she said it would not stop me from attending school but I may have a problem taking the exam to get my license. She suggested I call the state office who makes the decisions. I did that and again told the whole ugly story. The woman told me the decisions are made on a case-by-case basis; but, if she was me she would go for it. I was encouraged and applied. It hasn't been easy and I am still afraid. If God can make a way for me to get licensed, will I be able to convince someone to hire me? My conviction costed me my freedom, my marriage, the lists goes on. Is there anyone out there who can share something...anything with me? Am I chasing the wrong dream? I was an excellent CNA who made a bad choice. I have rededicated my life to Christ who is my Lord and Savior. I now manage my emotions instead of my emotions managing me. Open for comments. Thanks!

Look at the post kellyred in the introductions section. They tell a little about their life. You might two might glean information learn from each other.

It sounds like you have an uphill battle. One thing I do know is that if it is in God's plan for you to become a nurse, it will dang well happen! The only real thing humans have to worry about is.... When!

Stay strong in your faith, continue to seek His guidance and strength, and call upon Him when you feel yourself falling and/or flailing.

May you reach for your dreams and achieve them through God's grace and mercy.

Hi New Student,

You sound both ambitious and directed; excellent qualities to bear when facing the challenges that are ahead of you. Keep focused, optimistic and tuned into God. You will have to walk a very straight line with everyone watching but do it well and you will reach your goal.

I was in a position to hire a former convicted felon and had no regrets whatsoever. As I felt he would be, he became one of my strongest staff. He was an excellent student, became an excellent teacher, had impeccable attendance, and was an extremely caring and compassoinate clinician. I left that position many years ago but know that this individual is still there and doing just as well.

Thinking for the long term, it is unfortunate that you cannot get a straight answer as to whether a license will be granted or not.

I'd give you at best a 25% chance of getting approved. With most states requiring criminal background checks and fingerprinting, it is unlikely you'll be able to hide your past.

If I were on the board making a decision, it would be not to grant you a license.

You're dealing with sick & vulnerable adult/child populations and the temptation will be great. You may have changed.

Your working conditions will be difficult to say the least as you'll be entering the workforce in the midst of a nursing shortage. You may see your patients as easy prey.

It is not a chance I would take with the patients I'm supposed to be protecting.
