Hello, My name is lala. I am a chinese and work as a RN in Hong Kong. It seems to me that working as nurse in US or Canada is so different from my place , such as job description and environemnt. May be we could share of our experience who work as nurse in different countries.

hhehe, nice to meet you all! As Hong Kong was a colony of British (just retured to China in 1997) , nurses in Hong Kong are quite different from those in China too.

I studied Nursing in University which is a 4-year course. During the courses, we needed to study the anatomy, physiology , pharmacology , management, nursing care ..... ( i think that is same to overseas) Books used are mainly from USA <-- they are so expensive , such as text book of med-sur nursing from Lippincott..

In Hong Kong, one nurse is responsible to take care of about 10-14 patients(called a team ) at one shift. In my ward, there are about 30 beds, so we have 2 teams, 1-2 HCA is assigned for a ward every shift . ( is that same as your country?) Most of the time, we are very busy of doing the nursing care and treatments ordered by the doctor. If lucky, we could have a ruuner to help us. Very little time is spend on communicating with patients.

Moveover, status of nurses in Hong Kong is not as good as in oversea as most of the people think nurse is dependent to and as subordinate of doctors. I think that is totally different from overseas. Watching TV programme about medical field, such as ER , it seems to me that nurses and doctors are two independent disciplines. (is that right in reality?)

Hello lala989 and welcome to the forum. I have been to Hong Kong many times as a tourist and teacher and plan to return next year. I have not worked as a nurse in Hong kong but look forward to hearing about it from you.
