| new RN Hi I just graduated in December from the UTPA BSN program in Edinburg, TX. I just passed my boards on the 24th of January. I decided to go straight to ICU and I started to work in January at McAllen Medical Center in the Rio Grande Valley. Sometimes it seems like if I do not know much and there are so many new things out there to learn. I'll be in orientation for 3 months so I'll try to learn as much as I can during this time. Any advice on what to focus on learning first. |

Welcome to the forums and nursing One of the hardest things to learn as a new grad, is what you don't know. One of the hardest things for an experience nurse to do, is bring themselves back to that point and see things from your level. A lot of things we do as experienced nurses, we've done so many times, we no longer think about it. It has become second nature. Keeping that in mind, if you don't understand what is being done, or why, do ask your preceptors and other nurses. Where you are now (as a new nurse) it is better to ask the questions, show you want to know how to do things and get self-sufficient. Usually, as long as the other nurses feel you are putting forth the effort, getting to work on time and carrying your weight, they will be helpful and encouraging. Show you're willing to learn and do things, you'll be amazed at what they can show you Best wishes, Andrew Lopez, RN Nursefriendly, Inc.
