What is it like to be a nurse? I am reaching those days, about to graduate high school and I am thinking of followng the career of a nurse. My mother, grandmother and stepfather were all nurses and they tell me its a horrible job!

I would like others opinions and info on what it is really like to be a nurse. thank you all.

Re: New guy

If it were such a horrible job, why did they ALL go into nursing? Nursing is not a horrible job. You'll have bad days, but you'll also have good days- as with any other job. But I can't think of many other professions where your opportunities are virtually limitless, you get to help others & make a difference, and your job security is pretty much guaranteed. I would suggest contacting a local hospital or nursing school to see if you can shadow a nurse for a day or two- if possible, see if you can shadow nurses in several different areas of the hospital. This will give you a better idea of what its like to be a nurse.
