Hi, old RN but new to this board! :)

Hello, my name is Jenny P and I feel as though I'm older than dirt (at least my kids tell me that every time I see them!).

I've just started exploring this site, looks like a great place to be! I do enjoy online nursing discussions and am looking forward to getting to know people here.

I've been an RN for 38 years and due to a foot problem I'm now trying to find a new job for the first time in 25+ years.

Does anyone here have any suggestions for old work horses who loved their work? I've worked critical care most of my career.

I hope that's enough of an introduction, I'm off to explore this site some more!

Hi, Jenny, and welcome to the site!

'Old as dirt'? Heck....you must know my father in law then. He says he's been around since 'before the Big Bang'. Of course, that's an old running joke here. The in laws are from down here, but they owned a place in Grand Marais for years. He may have picked up the humour from up your way. Where in MN are you located?!

As for the job....office nurse? Or is that too tame?

Thanks for the Welcoming posts!

I'm in the Twin Cities. Somehow (after 34 years of fast-paced critical care); being an office nurse doesn't sound very exciting, but it is something that I'll be checking out in the near future.

I think it would be nice to be independently wealthy, but haven't found that particular job yet either!

Hey Old RN, I am only a couple of years behind you. I am in Management. I am learning much! I never thought I would do it, but the old Arthur Itis feels much better being off of my feet more. I have a ferw friends who are doing Insurance Case Management. They say it ihas been a great change of pace for them.

Re: Hi, old RN but new to this board! :)

I've always loved teaching; but don't have the credentials to back it up. It's not that I haven't tried; I've gone back to school 5 different times and Life always threw a curve ball and I had to drop out (many family issues just made it impossible to finish a BSN --I'm a Diploma grad). Going back to get my BSN now means I'll be paying off that school loan with my Social Security checks!

I've taught a lot of patients and co-workers, precepted, and have taught specialty Critical Care classes for CEUs in the past; most of the teaching I've done hasn't made any or very much money. So it's not a great way to earn a living for me.

I was doing a temporary duty job in QA/Risk Management and found that fascinating; however they did require a BSN (like so many other positions I'm interested in). I've tried being a telephone nurse, but am finding that I have too many synaptic lapses between my brain and my tongue by the end of an 8 hour shift.

I've worked newborn nursery and as a visiting nurse back in my younger days; I've also worked as an agency nurse in my younger days.

I'm very interested in the "How and Why" of things; I'm also interested in Nursing Informatics; and Board of Nursing and Practice Issues (including the legalities of Nursing).

I'm an optimist and know I will find another perfect job for me.
