Hi I am new to this forum but I read an article about nursing while in recovery and felt it was speaking to me. I graduated in 2005 but just took my boards in december of 2006. I have my Florida License I am in the IPN program have 16 minths sobriety under my belt trying to get a job been on several interviews and have not received a call back on hiring but many on not at this moment or no thank you. Is there a refresher course something I need to do?? I get discouraged and just want to say forget it but then I realize that Ihave accomplished a lot in my youthful age and that maybe I could get some help. Thank you

Re: Having hard time getting my first job First congratulations on your sobriety! Now a few questions. Don you have any kind of criminal record related to you substance abuse? Are you being monitored by a Board of Nursing? If you don't have a record and you are doing well in recovery - There's really no reason to tell a prospective employer about your sobriety. Though I would caution you to stay away from passing meds if your substance of choice was narcotics. If you are being monitored I have found honesty to be the best policy. When interviewing don't go through human resources - Call and make an appointment with the director of the department you want to work in. When you reveal your recovery - keep it simple - no need to go into the gory details. I am in recovery with 29 months clean and sober I have been working since June of '05 at a psych facility. It a great job - 8hr shifts etcs. Almost 50% of our nurses are in recovery. We are diversion and probation friendly. Keep le and your chin up, stay humble and teachable and great things will happen for you and countless others. Peace and Namaste hppy

Re: Having hard time getting my first job PS - Psych facilities seem to be a bit more forgiving and willing to work with Diversion/Probation nurses. Also if you are in a Nurse support group find out where others are working and try those places. Peace and Namaste Hppy
