Hi! I\'m doing a report on nurses...

Hi! I'm in Nutrition and Wellness class right now, working on a report. We had to pick a topic related to N&W and I chose nursing for these reasons:
-you have to work as a team
-you have to make good decisions
-you need to be a caring person
-you serve as a nutrition consultant sometimes
-and N&W is a core subject for nursing

We have to do research on this... and I'm having kind of a hard time getting many websites that have topics like this. If any of you know of any websites that could help I would appreciate if you post back. Or maybe some of you can answer in your own words. How often do you use N&W in your job??? I just need a little bit of insight. Sorry if this is a little confusing. I only have so much time to do this. Please post back!

    Hi Jennifer,

I'm in a clinical rotation for family practice nurse practitioner and we use this all the ime.

Any time a patient comes in for a well visit, we discuss diet, exercise and wellness. This is part of the standard approach to wellness.

It is mentioned any time a patient brings up the subject of diet and nutrition, is overweight, is having chronic problenms with knees or back (weight reduction will frequently help the problems).

Any time a patient has various other disease processes for instance diabetes, high cholesterol, HTN (high blood pressure) diet can and does effect all of these disease processes.

Part of the education classes for HTN and diabetes are devoted to nutrition.

Does this help? What specifically do you need?

    Hi Jennifer,
As Registered nurse for over 12 years I can tell you every time we look at someone we assess nutrition and wellness. In the hospital setting we evaluate anounts of fluids taken and food amounts eaten. On admission to the hospital setting the doctor determins the dietary plan and it is the adjusted by a registered dietician. If the patient is not able to eat or refuses this is again addressed and dietary changes are made. In home care nursing the client is evaluated and the diet is review at leats every 60 days. The Nurse and Nursing assistants communicate if the diet is not being followed or changes are needed to to growth, illness or intolerance. these assessments are ongoing and colaorated with the MD and dietician or nutritionist. I hope this helps.
