Hello Barb,
First question I'd ask is are you comfortable getting pulled, floating in your job now, and have you ever worked agency, per diem or had to go to different floors and orient yourself basically.
In travel nursing, you're expected to "hit the floor running" and be able to function while finding out where the bedpans, meds, etc are located.
This intimidates a lot of people and adds a lot of stress to you as a nurse.
I've done it for 10 years and can understand why others would not. Most people like to know where they are going to work, who they are working with and who to call when they need something.
You don't always have that kind of security working as a traveler. If you haven't I'd try working agency at first to get a feel for it. If that works out for you - go for it!
There's a whole section devoted to this topic in this forum:
Here's an interesting thread:
Negotiate directly without a travel company?:"Is it possible to negotiate directly with a hospital for an assignment without a travel nurse company? Has anyone had any experience with this?"
