Am I Too Old

I'm 47 years old and my thoughts are to go to school to become an RN. Would you say that I should find another field at my age? It's been a long time since I have been in school and its frightening. If this is something to consider does anyone have any sugestions on where to begin. I have seen so many nursing school ads its overwhelming. Is there a place for only old ladies !?! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Julie, and welcome to the site! 47...old? *Snort!* No, you are not old. There were 2 ladies in their 50's in my LPN class. Of course, I was the oldest in my BSN class, at 39. Basically, age is just a number.

If you are interested in Nursing, I say talk to a counselor at your local Community College, first. They would be able to formulate a good plan of action for you.

Keep in touch, and let us know how things work out.

You are definately not too old if you have your mind set. I think I've worked with a few new grads who were 'too young'. With the ability to get your degree in 1-2 years and all the oppurtunities with different fields of nursing you definately are not too old. I agree with starting with your local Community College.

Honey, I am 42 now and will graduate in May so no you aren't to old. As for not being in school for so long. Well, I finished the 7th grade and quit 2 weeks into the 8th to get married I was 14 then. I had my son when I was 21 and decided I wanted to go to nursing school and did, I graduated from LPN school when he was about 2 and 1/2 . I know it seems impossible sometimes but you can do it if you really try and it would be nice if you had a good support system at home,(but not Req'd). Just try it. I can promise you, it is worth it when you get out. Good Luck whatever you decide.

Hi Julie,
You are defiently not too old. I graduated from an Lpn program at 49, I am now trying to the LPN-Rn program through distance learning. I agree talk to someone at a community college. Good Luck
