| hi ladies and gents, I'm a divorced single mom of a 6 month old and am thinking of going into travel nursing, but staying local. I don't have anyone who can watch my son except on weekdays, but I really want to continue working as a floor nurse. I've heard that if I work for an agency I can work days with no weekends or holidays - is this correct? Will the fact that I can only do days M-F prove a problem in finding work? Also, are full time and part time hours offered through agencies? Any suggestions or advice are appreciated! Thanks! |

| For Travel Assignments I won't say it is impossible but it can be a challenge. Maybe more possible as a Per Diem Nurse. Depends where you live and your specialty. I would contact a number of agencies maybe ones that have a Travel Division and also a local perdiem office in your area. You could approach facilities about direct contracts working asan Indepndent contractor or subcontractor. Seearticle on www.NurseTraveler.org on this. One idea is find another Nurse Friend and Travel The country taking turns watching the baby then working. Alternating assignments. I have an automatic application on my website that will blast you and connect you with my favorite recruiters from my favorite companies that would give you some great leads immediately without jumping through hoops. | Re: Travel Nursing and the single mother... Another suggestion, not related to the agencies--why not try looking for a teenager to watch the infant on weekends if you need to work? I know when I work weekends it works out well for me because I can pay a teen less money. |

| Re: Travel Nursing and the single mother... This is a good thread. I'm a pre-nursing student and a single mother to an 8 month old. I would lke to start traveling once I get some experience under my belt but wasn't sure what the best route to go would be. My sister is a nurse who has done some traveling and she suggested even if I did one assignment during the summertime and hired a teenager as a nanny I'd still make decent money. Would this be true? I would like to end up traveling so that I can take larger pieces of time off between assignments and so spend more time with my daughter. Actually what I'd love to do is travel nursing in the winter and then market gardening (growing produce for a farmer's market) during the summer but that's sort of one of those things that might not be feasible. In any case I do want to travel but am not sure how to go about it with having a small child. I'm thinking she'll be about 4 or 5 by the time I am experienced enough to travel - 3 years until I get my RN, so then a year or so of experience before I can go travel. Thoughts? |
