Nurses for Nurses

My name is Lisa Fowler. I wanted to tell you about a company I have started. It is called Nurses for nurses. First I would like to start by saying why I started this business. I was a travel nurse for many years. I was licensed in 18 states. I have to say some of the people I have met during my travels were some of the most caring and dedicated people in the world. One day during a contract in San Francisco I was roller bladeing with my daughter. I used all the safety equipment trying to be a strong role model, however I fell and broke my wrist. When this happened I was unable to complete my contract. I was financially devastated. I had to move back home without a dime to my name. The state literally laughed at me. They stated, You’re a nurse…live off your friends and family! I was horrified. I had no home…no money and a daughter that depended on me. We were homeless for several months . I could not get a job due to the fact I was considered a liability. After three months a skilled nursing facility gave me a chance. I worked there with a broken arm taking care of others. It was hard for me to understand. I was still a nurse. I still thought like a nurse. I still cared like a nurse. But I could not take on the physical demands the job entails. I thought about this hard time in my life, and I could not believe that I was useless without the use of my limb. I have met many nurses that are in this same position. Many of us are getting older, and the physical demands are getting greater. What options do we have? I decided to start a company. This company is a small one. The concept of the company is for nurses to take care of other nurses. We rent or buy real estate. We cater to travel nurses and give them things no one else offers. This is ran and operated by nurses or medical staff. We offer deluxe housing in safe communities, close to the hospitals and perks that are focused on the needs and wants of the travel nurse. We offer investment opportunities for nurses to prepare for their futures. We hope to involve retired nurses to help with the company and help with income to supplement their social security. We have two homes at this time. One in Phoenix AZ the other in Spartanburg SC. I have nurses that have offered their homes in other locations. We are looking at one in Tucson at this time. Our first home is up and running now in Scottsdale...there are six hospitals within 30 min. This house is little to NO COST to you and the profit made will go to help other nurses and medical staff...this is a win win for everyone!!!! We would love for any of the nurses to come and see what this is about. I am not a writer as you can tell from this letter. I am not a millionaire with money to burn. I am a nurse. Where I come from that still counts for something! I consider myself blessed to have met all the nurses and staff over the years. I don’t want a big company to benefit from this company. This is for the people that are in the trenches, the dedicated, and compassionate men and women of the medical field. This company is built for them. I feel this could change the lives of many. We are just getting started and would love for you to be a part of it. Thank you for your time.
Lisa Fowler RN

Re: Nurses for Nurses

Hi, Lisa. You get it! That is just huge. I have been contracting myself out for 6 years. I discuss this with my nurse friends all the time. We need a break in this profession. We (pardon the expression) get pimped by every company we work for. We are out there doing the work for them, by ourselves getting thrown into situations daily and just having to be extremely flexible in every situation. We need more support and kudos for the work we do. I am so glad that you get it. I have had a huge recent life change and am now living by a whole new set of rules. My husband left me and my daughter, just left us here to deal with this whole life we had created together, including the debt. The flexibility of contract nursing has helped me get thru this. I am now working towards a holistic degree to complement my 14 years as a nurse. I will always probably work as a O.R. nurse though. I have always loved it. I may be interested in your company. I am waiting for some finalization with my divorce, but then the world is an open door for me! I am so glad you are living one of your dreams, as many of us will benefit and our lives will be richer as nurses for what you are doing! rnstar43@yahoo.com

Re: Nurses for Nurses

Thank you so much for the reply...you dont know how much I appreciate your support...I have dedicated my life to this...and I believe in it with all my heart...I still work as a staff nurse...I always will...its my love....and I dont want to give that up...but I know there are many others out there just like us...thats the whole point!!! I have struggled for years to start this company...and I feel if nurses understand the problems we face and the power we can have in numbers...the ability to have a choice...the strength and support from others...we can make our own lives and not depend on the company or state to look after us...they will not!!! Speaking as a nurse...and I traveled for many years...I would rather give my money to another nurse...this is a win win for everyone...I just have to get the word out...to let nurses know they have a choice!!! I am moving things into the house as I type...and I hope to have a pic for you soon...this is not like anything we have seen...I would really like for you to see what Im talking about...give me a week or so and I will send you some pics...and again...thank you so much for your support...I have had many struggles to follow this dream...and you dont know how much it means....take care...Lisa

This sounds like a great idea. Your story was touching. It seems so farfetched that something like that could happen, but it could happen to me. Do you have a website yet? Did I miss that?

Re: Nurses for Nurses

Hi disholicious...no I dont have a website yet...but we are working on it...we are just starting this company up...open house for the one in AZ we hope to be on the 10th...this is so amazing...the travelers have nooooo idea what we are talking about...just to let you know a few perks...pool...jacuzzi...pool table...big screen tv...bikes...There are soooo many perks I cant even attempt to say...I mean this is so much more than just a house...I have nurses that donate things to decorate...and if you think about this...its very simple...I worked as a travel nurse for many years as I said...we have to pay someone...we never see a dime of that money..not unless we find our own housing...then a 13 week lease is looked down on...some of the areas are unsafe...and we get a limited amount of things...then we have to buy small things...dishes...towels...stuff like that...that all adds up...and you dont want to move it again...so what do we do with it? Some as I said donate it to the houses...its perfect idea...we take care of one another...and everyone wins...the only ones that wont is the complexes that are getting rich off us...and can I be frank about this...when I traveled I researched every place I stayed...I have a daughter and as I said..some are not safe...so I wanted to know where my money was going...and would call to check...act as if I was moving to the state...and low and behold what did I find...every single nurse pays a diff rate...and if they give you...example...$1000 a month...they find a place for say...$700...do you ever see the rest of that money...are you even told about it???? NOOOO! So I say...if we pay the money...lets get what we pay for! Lets pay other nurses like us! I dont know if you will be here around the 10th...but I would really love for all that are interested to come and see....what we plan is to have a cook out...FREE FOOD guys...it will be of course first come first serve...but all we want is for other nurses to see what we are talking about...no strings...no pressure...just come look...and..see here is the catch...tell us what works...what doesnt...this company really is for us...so who better to fine tune it??? If your interested email me...or even...not sure if I can do this...but call....602-475-4185....Im sorry guys...bit tired...been moving all weekend...would love to hear more comments...take care....Lisa

Lightbulb Re: Nurses for Nurses

Lisa,

I have a 3 bedroom 1 1/2 bath, two story vacation home in South Lake tahoe, Ca and would be interested in leasing to specifically travel nurses.

I am an ER nurse in Lake Isabella (MT. Mesa), CA. I live 90 miles away and travel up there, work my shifts (while staying up there) and then drive home. I have been extremely fortunate to have such a good friend and co-worker, very caring. I stay in her home, my own room with my own bathroom and 99% of the time, it is available for me (I insist if she have family up that they take priority, and then find other accomodations). In any case, I understand how important it is to be taken care of and to stay in a nurturing enviroment and could not accept anything less tahn that.

The reason I am responding to your story is because my husband and I would like to be able to lease our house out to travel nurses rather than vacationers. It is our dream in the near future to be able to retire into this home. This home means a lot to us and we feel that renting to travel nurses would mean that our place would be cared for very well. I know a lot of travel nurses and they are very hard working, commited, and caring individuals. We are also sure that the nurses staying there would truely feel at home, be blessed and enjoy their travel assignment all the more.

It is walking distance to the lake, which is visible from the front yard, with a jacuzzi on a deck in the back yard to relax your tired achey muscles after working all night or day. It is a very safe and quiet neighborhood. The closest hospital (Barton Memorial) is less than 10 min up the street and the ski lifts are 10 min. in the oppisite direction.
Our home is COMPLETELY furnished, just bring your clothes, food, and your family. $1800/ mo It can sleep a nurse and his/her family of 5 or up to 3 nurses sharing the house (private bedrooms for each) all utilities included: elec., gas, phone, water, and trash.

I tried going on the classified section of Ultimate nurse.com and it would only allow me to list if the home were in Alabama????

In any case, Lisa. If you or someone you know would be interested pls. email me at Tsatton@bak.rr.com. Good luck to you. When you get your website up, let me know, I'd like to check it out.

Sincerely,
Theresa Satton

Re: Nurses for Nurses

Hi Theresa! This is the exact concept of this company...you are right...nurses will take care of your home....and they deserve wonderful homes such as this one....I would love to come up and see it in person...this we feel will become a trend all over the US...and I have other nurses such as yourself that feel the same way...we will open our hearts and homes to people we feel will appreciate it and very much deserve it! I would love to have travel nurses to take care of your home...as I said...I have just started this...and we are working night and day to get it going....I have my first open house 09-10-2007 from 5pm-10pm here...there are six hospitals within 25 minutes of the home...I hope to have pics on here very soon! If you can give me an email address I can send it via mail now. During the open house we are having a cook out in honor of the travel nurses....FREE FOOD!!! Nothing fancy...burgers and dogs...but the idea is for people to see what we are talking about...this is like nothing out there! If you have a chance I would love for you to come...if your able to do so...call me...I will give you directions and explain more of what we have to offer...this is a chain tho...without one nurse...I cant benifit another...so if you know any that are coming to the phoenix area...just ask them to drop by...we would love to meet them! I have to say one thing about this Theresa...nurses that stand together can change the world....we all have worked hard to carry that title...it takes determination and heart....with people like that on our side....how could we lose? Thank you for taking time to read my story...and if you can give me some time Im sure I can help with your home! Take care....Lisa....602-475-4185

Thumbs up Re: Nurses for Nurses

I would love to come and check out your open house but between the drive (from Tehachapi, Ca) and my work schedule, it's just not possible. My email is listed above. I would love to see pictures though. Maybe what you could do is start a portfolio of each home so that travel nurses would be able to visualize where thay were going to stay. This kind of bussiness would also benefit the hospitals because it would draw more interest in accepting an assignment in that area.

For me to be away from home and my family, I need predictability, reliabilty, and stability. That's why I love staying at my friend/college's house. Also, I have been very reluctant to do travel assignments because of the unpredictability of it: the assignment itself and where you are assigned to stay (living quarters). I have a lot of respect for travel nurses. It is not easy to move around and continue to adapt to new people, places, policies, procedures, cities....... I am thinking when my youngest is out of high school then I will do travel assignments, and bring my husband along. He hopefully will be retired then.

Anyway, keep in touch and let me know when you would like to drive into Lake Tahoe. I will make arrangements for you to not only see it but stay there yourself for a few nights.

Sincerely,
Theresa

Lisa,

go to the paperclip on "Reply to Thread". Then click on the brouse tab and you will begin to brouse into your own down loaded pics on your computer. It allows you to ddown load up to 5 thumbnail pics or: When you've got your website up you can type your website into the "send trackbacks to" box.

Hopefully this helps,
