Post Best Specialty

Hi everyone!!

I am getting ready to start my last semester and I plan on applying to become a travel after a year or so in my specialty. Thats where I have a question... What is the best specialty for travel nursing. I am leaning toward ICU or ER but I can't make up my mind. I was hoping for some advice from the seasoned traveler's out there.

TIA

Kath

Re: Best Specialty

There are usually a lot of ICU & ER travel positions, but there are also positions in L & D, OR, Med/Surg, PACU.... that being said, 1 year of experience might be OK to travel in Med/Surg, but for more specialized areas like ICU, ER, OR, etc, hospitals are going to want a minimum of 2 years experience, plus all applicable certifications.

Re: Best Specialty

I cannot speak with regard to Travel Nursing, but as for ER & ICU, I would definately have the following:

ACLS, PALS, BLS(Of Course), TNCC or CCRN(Definately Helps)

Re: Best Specialty

i gree with amanda, the best specialties for travelers are ICU, ER, and OR or PACU, but you really should have at least 2 years before travelling with them. I do med/surg tele and cardiac step down and I started with 1 year...step down I would recomend 2 years with also.

Re: Best Specialty

Thanks for the info. I plan on getting my ACLS with in 6 months of passing my boards.

I think I am going to stick with ICU right now with hopefuly the chance to float to the ER

Thanks again
