Question Can You Chop And Change

    Hi every one,

i have a quick question, if you are trainind as a diabilites nurse, can you actively take a practice nurse job without adult branch nursing, or can you as a disbility nurse take a role as a Health Care Asssitant and adminster medication and other treatment.JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE REGISTERED.

I am confused, i speak reference a working colleague who has done just this,

Another friend of mine was a peads Nurse, he had to retrain via the OU to be able to adult nurse,

can someone put me correct on my understanding, in the nicest way please.

    Best Wishes

    Maggie

Nursing school give you a basic training so to speak. You get a little bit of many different areas. You can't be a ICU nurse then the next day just step in and be a labor and delivery nurse or vice versa. You get on the job training and orientation to each area just like a mechanic that works on a compact car couldn't step up and work on a jet engine in a day.
Myself I started in Peds with part time surgical nursing then went to home health caring for pediatric and adults then went to labor and delivery and also had to learn operating and recovery room. I have ACLS certification but DO NOT put me in ICU or ER

Red face Re: Can You Chop And Change

Hi thanks for the reply, although what you have said makes perfect sense, i don't feel that she should be carring out registered nursing interventions whislt in a Health Care Asssitant role even if she is registered,

I feel she will be putting pateints at risk and not compling with the NMC conduct, moreover the senior nurse is accountable for her actions, and if employed as a HCA she should only carry out those duties.

It sis complex situation for me working there as i am 1st a HCA myself adn 2nd a student nurse, and when training these issues face you full on when you are learning the ropes. Where others that have been trained for years (25-30)seem to forget, especially in my practice.

I am seen as interferring, but i feel i am right, thanks again

I was reading your message wrong as if this person was a registered nurse wanting to go to a different area. You're right nobody who isn't trained should be doing things out of their scope of practice and the person in charge should not be asking them to nor tolerate them doing things they can't do. Each state has a nurse practice act telling what roles of different levels of nursing is and hospitals have policies as to what things can be deligated or who can do things no matter what unit they work.
