    Some More Schooling Advice

Hi! My name is Kayleen. I am a senior in high school and I have had my heart set on nursing since a very young age. I have applied to liberal arts colleges and 4 year bsn schools. I get different advice from different people. Some say you should get a broad based background at a liberal arts college and then go into nursing that way if you ever change your mind you have the BS/BA behind you. Then, others say that if you know you want to be a nurse then you should go to the nursing school, get your bachelors in nursing there, then move on to get msn etc in just a year and be at the top in just 5 years. Any advice? Im looking to talk to both nurses who went both routes so any insiders opinion is greatly appreciated!! thanks!

IMHO, take the route for BSN. While doing such if so inclined take courses non-related to BSN. In fact, BSN will be your major and you could do a minor non-related to nursing. Later, you could expand the minor to a major if you wanted your career to head a different direction from nursing.

I'm sure you will find others with BSN & non-related BA/BS, too. I know many in nursing that it is there second, or third career.

    ... my 2 cents

    kayleen,

i'm 25 and have a BA in Spanish and environmental studies from a public 4 year liberal arts college in NY state. i decided on these majors because i was unsure of what career path i would like to pursue. i am now set on nursing and wish i had received a bsn instead as i now have to return to school for at least two years. you are lucky you know what career you would like to head into and i agree that you should go for your BSN. find a BSN program that will allow you space to have a minor in any subject you find interesting. most will.
