I am currently an LPN who is looking to go for my RN. I work in a doctor office type setting, and I am unable to attend school full time as their hours are pretty much 8-5:30 m-f. Not to mention I cannot afford to go back on the little income I make in this type of setting. I know some hospitals will assist with tuition for nurses to go back. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about getting into the hospitals? I don't want to seem as if the only reason I am wanting to work there is because I want them to pay for me to go back. I work in pediatrics now, and granted I love it, but the doctor office/clinic setting is not for me long term. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Emmy. No one needs to know your plans of furthering your education when you apply and interview. That is up to you, but it is not something they need to know. In reality, you would need some time to get lined up to start classes anyways.

Just apply! Hospitals need nurses, including LPN's. Don't sweat it. Update your resume, apply and put your best foot forward. If they ask why you are switching from office to hospital, be truthful in you are not challenged enough where you work anylonger, although you like the people you work with. Tell them you enjoy learning, and are ready to learn again. You'll be a shoe in!

XOEmmyLouOX, honesty is always the best policy. However, you also must take care of #1 [yourself!]. Best case scenario, find a hospital that hires LVN's [some don't, btw] and tell them your plans are to further yourself professionally by working at such a fine hospital [which is wherever your interview is, LOL], as well as earn an RN degree.

Some hospitals will actually see your desire to move from LVN-RN as a plus as long as they think your going to stay on after completing your RN program.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to send my resume to the HR dept of the local hosp and hope for the best. Getting to talk to one is next to impossible it seems anymore..

Rather than sending your resume, you might want to think about hand walking that puppy straight over to HR.
