HCA Fetal Heart Monitoring Requirement:
AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices (FHMPP) = Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course (IFMC)
AWHONN Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices (AFHMPP) = Advanced Fetal Monitoring Course (AFMC)

The Intermediate Course is designed for registered nurses with a minimum of six months clinical nursing experience using fetal heart monitoring technology in an Intrapartum setting.

Can LPN/LVN’s take the FHM courses? AWHONN maintains its position that only registered nurses, advanced practice nurses and physicians with professional expertise should initiate and evaluate the ongoing use of EFM technology.

How often do nurses need to complete a fetal monitoring course and what is the structure for attending fetal monitoring courses within HCA?

1. Each RN who does fetal heart monitor, should complete the IFMC.
2. Each RN should have an approved fetal monitoring course every 2 years.
3. After the IFMC course has been completed, the following course should be taken for renewal: The HCA Online Advanced FTM on HealthStream should be the next course completed; No other fetal heart monitoring course will meet the HCA requirement.
4. The HCA Online course will continue to be the required course every two years. This course is updated periodically to ensure content is current and meeting training requirement.
5. All Nurses that are “Travelers” or contract service from an “Agency” should have taken the IFMC before starting. Additionally, it must not be greater than 2 years since they took the AWHONN Fetal Heart monitoring course.

Can nurses take the AWHONN AFMC instead of the HCA Online course for recertification? No. At this time, HCA is not endorsing the AWHONN AFMC.

If a RN is hired who has previously taken the IFMC (formerly FHMPP course), can provide proof of this, the RN is not required to re-take the IFMC course. The RN would then need to take the Online Advanced course two years after the date in which they took the IFMC.

S.T.A.B.L.E.

The S.T.A.B.L.E. Education Program is designed to provide important information about neonatal stabilization for maternal/infant healthcare providers in all settings—from community hospitals and birth centers, to emergency rooms and more complex hospital environments. This course goes far beyond the content learned in the NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), teaching newborn assessment and on-going stabilization.

HCA Perinatal Advisory Board Recommendations S.T.A.B.L.E.

• S.T.A.B.L.E. Learner Course continues is endorsed by HCA as the best assessment course for clinicians involved in the care of newborns by HCA Perinatal Clinical Workgroup;
• Level III facilities have scheduled staff to attend the course, beginning with NICU staff;
• Most perinatal facilities include the course as part of education and competency for new-hire orientation;
• Participants respond with improved knowledge and increased comfort level;
• NICU staff voice appreciation for the improved knowledge based of Newborn Nursery Staff, which helps to avoid unnecessary interruption of NICU staffing and workflow;
• Perinatal Clinical Workgroup expands previous recommendation of the program to caregivers involved in the assessment and continued management of the newborn;
• Healthcare providers participating included RNs, LPNs, GNs, RTs, NNPs, and MDs.

HCA Perinatal Clinicians including those involved in the assessment, care and continued management of the newborn shall update their newborn assessment and stabilization skills by completion of a STABLE course every two years; required from all NICU staff, followed by NN staff. Labor and Delivery as well as Post-Partum units are encouraged to begin training Charge Nurses as resource staff; and schedule S.T.A.B.L.E. Learner Course opposite year NRP renewal and training.
