Thread: I'm in a panic.

    I'm in a panic.

My clean date is 12-13-05 and I started visiting this website around that time. I've posted a few times. My drug of choice was mostly benzo's but of course I know that I'm addicted to anything mood altering and not just my "drug of choice". I guard my recovery as if it is fragile and precious.....and it is. Recently I went on a trip and one evening I ate a dessert that had a fruit glaze topping. I took a bite and it tasted "different" but not like alchohol. I took another bite and I passed it to my husband and had him taste it. He told me "yes, it has alcohol in it." I went into an inner panic. I prayed immediately and tried to remain calm. I'm not sure if it was mostly my disease "screwing" with my head but I started to feel the burning from my mouth all the way down to my stomach. I wanted to vomit. I wanted to wash my mouth out. I wanted to do anything to get it out of me. It was on a buffet and I asked a server if it had alcohol and he said "yes." I told him "that information should be posted in front of the dessert name. " (There were also children eating) I went to our room and called the front desk to have the master chef call me. (this is how upset I was) He called and informed me "usually it is fixed with alcohol but not that night." I am 100% certain he is wrong because my husband also said it had alcohol. I prayed and prayed and I did not crave anything or had to fight an urge.....by the grace of God. However now I am concerned about showing positive for alcohol. I took 2 bites. My husband said it seemed to only have a sutle taste and no it wasn't cooked out. It wasn't that type of dessert. Do you think I will test positive? I just returned and I'm sure I will be tested this week. Should I let my monitoring counsler know? Please give some input. Thanks so much.

I would let your counselor know, and mention WHERE you ate, etc.

Oh you poor thing; I understand how this must make you feel. I too would suggest you call your BON contact person. In my heart though, I'm sure you'll be fine and if it does show up in a urine screen, it will probably be deemed "incidental". Sometimes things like this can happen and we have no control over it. Let us know how things work out.....good luck.:rose:

In most dishes that contain alcohol, the alcohol cooks out in the cooking process...

Never assume that the alcohol in a recipe (sic) is cooked off. This topic was of interest to me as I had several Positives early in diversion - all were ruled incidental but I started looking a alcohol burn off charts and found that even a stew with say 2 cups of wine in it still contains about 18% of the originally added alcohol after 3 hours cooking time. Plus the dish in question was not cooked. I think the best thing whenever there is a questionalbe intake is to call your case manager immediately - I have mine's cell number on speed dial

As far as going out is concerned we do eat out a lot but when the waiter comes to take our order I simply explain that I am deathly allergic to alcohol in any form and to please inform the chef that I would like no sauces glazes etc..... I haven't had a positive in over 8 months "knock on wood!"

    Peace and namaste
