Nursing students from Mohave CC attend 'boot camp'

BULLHEAD CITY - A total of 55 students new to the Mohave Community College nursing program this spring semester gathered from all campuses Tuesday on the Henry Campus-Bullhead City campus for “Boot Camp for Nursing Students.”

Nurses entering Nursing I, and licensed practical nurses entering MCC to pursue their RN, were put through the paces to learn what is expected during the tough years of study to become registered nurses.

The boot camp was the idea of MCC nursing faculty members Penny Ellis, RN, MSN, and Marilyn Parker, RN, MSN, as a way to prepare the students for what lies ahead.

The students were instructed on what to expect, study skills, computer work, the nursing testing system, available online sources and even a session on humor. They also were given a short program on available financial aid by the Mohave County One-Stop Career Center.

“The effort made by Ellis and Parker and the lab staff was a tremendous asset for the students, and this should help get them off to a good start,” MCC Nursing Director Linda Riesdorph said.

“These students will be very busy while taking these classes, and this session answers a lot of questions they have beforehand so they are fully prepared when classes start,” she said.
