I hope someone can help me with my feelings.
I'm just about through school (August) and I had my med pass the last two weeks. We have to pass the 'med pass' to Pass clinicals.. period.. I accept that and respect that.. Here's my delima...
Last week we were about to hang blood on a patient and I was getting the pre vitals. This lady had trouble breathing and was wearing a mask with 02 so I looked at my nurse and said " I need to take this under her arm" and she said "OH, no you can just take it orally, there's holes in the mask". and I felt something wasn't right and I wouldn't have even taking it orally to begin with but I did..
Then the nurse said "oh, wait, that thermometer is broke" (the one on the dinamap machine). So I got her disposable one and proceeded.
Later in the hall, the nurse said "do you know why I told you to take the thermometer out?"
and I said "you told me it was broke"
Then she said "Yes it is, but it's also RED!!"
The a few hours later at post conference my teacher asked me what color an oral thermometer was and I said "Blue" Which I've always Known... I guess I thought the thermometer on the dinamap machine was permanent or something because I didn't even look at the color or consider it. (I do with the portable ones and glass ones)..
So I kind of felt tricked by that one nurse and now wondering it THIS can cause me to fail...
I know there's mistakes made in class, i've heard of similar and perhaps worse things happen.. Thank goodness I didn't pass a wrong med or anything..
What do you think? I missed school today for having a temp and stomacheache.. I think maybe I should ask the teacher tommorow if I've failed the med pass or something, but I don't want to make too big a deal out of it and make her mad and cause me to fail.. I mean, maybe it's blown over.. HELP!!!!!!!!!!
Hi! I personally think that if your instructor hasn't said anything to you yet its prolly not that big a deal. With my experiences so far, if my instructors are upset about something we always know right away.....generally right after the problem occurs. I'm sure everything will be fine! Keep your chin up and good luck!
I agree with Jamie. If she had a problem with it, I cant imagine an instructor passing on an opportunity to let you hear about it. So, just forget it and move one to whats next in line. More and bigger things to be thinking about now. Keep The Faith

Thanks! I got the nerve up today to ask if I failed but she said no and our other instructor said I worry too much.. but before she said that, she said "I would of failed you because that's something serious". But she meant for that ONE procedure, not for the whole clinical. I guess it's kind of like the 3 strikes your out thing but depends on the nature of the mistake... I feel alot better now but I'm going to watch my back alot more now too. Thanks again, Rebecca, SVN
Glad to hear everything worked out ok! As for you "worrying to much" I understand that, I am the same way.....its hard not to worry when you want to succeed so badly. Good luck in your classes!
