Should I do LPN or RN?

Hello:

I was in the last year of a BSN program but I got a 73.8% in Patterns of Adult Health. I needed 75% to continue. So the school dropped me from the program. It said that I can get a RN from someplace else and go back to them to get a BSN.

I've been exploring Excelcior to get a RN online. Does anybody have any information on the quality of Excelcior program?

I am also contemplating on getting a LPN. Would this take less time? I looked at one school that said that it will take me 60 weeks of day-schooling to get the LPN. I've taken a lot of nursing courses and may be they will cut me some slack. Is this a better route? Is LPN to BSN a better option than RN-BSN?

I know it's a lot of questions. But I am confused with all these options and need guidance from people wo have gone down this path.

If you go for your LPN, you will gain experience, both job wise AND school wise. You'd be able to use some of that credit toward your degree. And yes, if you go for your LPN, quite possibly some of your previous coursework will apply toward that.

I started with my LPN and after 5 years went back for my RN. I did a "bridge" program and didn't have much trouble with it being as I had been practicing for a while. I have no intention to go for my BSN at this time, but you never know. At least you can be out there working and know if it is for you before investing soo much time. Good luck

is there an AD program near you that would take any credits you did earn in the BSN program then you could still get the RN without starting over.

IMO, I'd look for an ADN program. If you want to get your BSN then starting with the LPN would be a waste of time if you can get your ADN, then go to the BSN. An LPN program is a lot of work and a lot of clinical hours, but it doesn't count towards your BSN. Good luck with whatever you decide.
