Ah! Trap the new kid, eh? Okay...I'm prepared for any eventuality, dabnabit, I'm a NURSE! (and not just a person posing as one...although there is a posing game I play with....uh...never mind.)

Okay: Topics up for Discussion!

1. Who thinks cardiovalvulotomy just ROLLS off the tongue?

2. Do you wonder, as I do, why Kat has a smiley icon with a whip...hmmm. :whipping:

3. What things make you go, "hmmm" (See topic #2 for ideas.)

4. We could start a "I'm a nurse from [insert state/country] and I want to move to [insert state/country] how/why/when/where do I [insert question]" thread. Those are always terribly exciting.

5. Why does TomB have six highly suspect and rumored-to-be interchangeable arms? Hmmm... :39:

6. Is NavyJim "really" in the navy, or is he just "posing as naval personnel?" Is NavyJim REALLY just part of a now-defunct disco band?

7. Is Busy-Bee really that busy, or is she taking Prozac like the rest of us, in which case, she should call herself "Laid-back Butterfly?" Does cougarnurse REALLY have a cougar, or is it, in truth, just an anemic goldfish?

Oh the tangled web we weave....

8. Why is Peptol Bismol pink? :39:

9. Why do people insist on dressing their dogs?

10. Who thinks Sierra_LPN should be given his decoder ring NOW for typing all these useless words instead of doing something sensible?

Talking Re: RN's Vs. LPN's

I think Sierra poses some very good questions that makes you go hmmmmm... I wondered about that whip myself. Maybe Tom should get the whip. Wish I'd have thought of making clothing for dogs.

Let's start with a little orphan annie decoder slider before you get the ring though:

Re: RN's Vs. LPN's

I have been an LPN, now an RN. I love working with the LPN's that we have on our floor. They are awesome. They have all the same responsibilities as the RN's minus charge duties and spiking blood. They can run blood just not spike it. So crazy!

I don't regret getting my RN for one minute. My pay immediately almost doubled. It has opened many new doors for me. Doors I wouldn't have been able to get through with my LPN. I do have to be totally honest and tell you I feel as though I am more respected as an RN. Again, this is crazy, but it is how it is.

I also know of one LPN who lost his license for working outside his scope of practice. In the other hospital where I worked as an LPN while finishing schooling for my ADN, the poor LPN's were assigned 9 pts to the RN's 4 pt. load; I felt that this was not only unfair, but unsafe.....I don't care what the title is, I try to show respect to whomever I work with and expect the same treatment. It just makes sense to work together and leave the cattiness and superiority out of the whole equation........
from virgil rn

way to go, team work is key no matter what the title. I was an lpn for 10 years and now an rn for almost 2 years.when asked how long I have been a nurse ,my response is 12 years. when they get specific I do say I have been an rn for 2.I was a nursing assistant for 3 years before my lpn years, and all I have to say is that the more we respect each other and work together the better care our patients will get.

Sierra, you crack me up. I love your posts. BTW, I can handle six whips - one for each arm. They are very useful when trying to get a HD patient to remain on their machine for the entire prescribed treatment time. :-)

I have been fortunate and all of the LPNs that I've worked with have been excellent nurses. Many had more experience than myself and I went to them with questions, etc.

I think all nurses should be RNs. And that's NOT a slam against LPNs. Somehow they should be grandfathered into RN positions (based on experience and maybe a series of inservices). They should discontinue LPN programs and offer only two or four year RN programs. It is basically the same job now with few exceptions - am I right?

I agree with you Tom.....I take a lot of criticism for my views on this but i'm not alone in my thinking (thanks to Tom).......I was an LPN also......but as an administrator I have stopped hiring LPN's/LVN's at my hospital's.......many other peoples posts have pointed to the same issue.....LPN's do just about everything RN's do with very few exceptions.....why not have an all RN workforce?.......if it wasn't for the nursing shortage we wouldn't be having this discussion.....the LPN numbers have been steadily going down around the country in hospitals.....they are still useful and needed in nursing homes and doctors offices.......with the "2" year RN programs.....why not become an RN and not a LPN........"issue"......and its real........if you can't cut it as an RN in school but you become an LPN in one short year but do all the work of an RN.........????? does anyone else see the problem? When I suggested closing the LPN program at a local college recently at a meeting (i'm on the board) the LPN program director became enraged and almost attacked me.....fortunately she is 5 ft 3 and weighs 120 lbs and i'm 6 foot and weight 220.......but she scared me........its easier to get LPN instructors......everything about it is easier and that's the problem.....we need more ADN or BSN instructors and space......

Re: RN's Vs. LPN's

I think everyone else has basically covered the interaction between RNs and LPNs. It's really a spectrum....luck of the draw I guess. But, for those of you who have not made a commitment to either program yet, I suggest you browse this site: Featured Schools - Online Nursing Schools and Programs Nursing Programs – Search Top Nursing Schools and Programs

It has articles about LPNs and RNs and career opportunities that are available to you once you have those degrees.
