Question Questions about scholarship hospitals

Hi all! I have been talking with my husband and I have decided to go ahead and pursue a career in nursing. (I posted up in the introduction forum.)

I have called one hospital and found out they give full scholarships if you promise to work for them for the amount of time they pay for you to go to school! (i.e. go to school for 2-years, work for them for 2-years) I don't know if all the hospitals in my area do that, but I am thinking they do.

That leads me to my posting here. What advice could ya'll give me in looking at the different hospitals that offer such a scholarship? I would end up working, as an RN, for 2-years; so I want to be sure I accepted something from the best hospital I could find. I would obviously still be learning during the 2-years as well, so I would want to find one that I could learn the most from.

My goal is to be an ER nurse. What could you tell me about what to look for the in ER? What kinds of questions should I be asking (and who should I be asking those questions?) what should I expect via scheduling, etc.

I am very excited and will be visiting all the hospitals that offer scholarships within an hour-and-a-half drive. I probably won't be able to start the nurse classes till the spring term, as I have to get the prerequisites out-of-the-way first, so I have time to look and decide.

Re: Questions about scholarship hospitals

A lot of nurses I work with do this. I think it's a great idea if you get into a hospital that you like, and can be a nightmare if you don't like it. I suggest asking around to some of the nurses who work at each hospital. We are pretty honest creatures when asked about our working conditions. Also ask management how easy or difficult it is to transfer units. You might start on 1 unit and want to transfer, but they may make you wait 6 months.
