Part-Time Nurse

Hello guys,
I am almost done getting my teaching degree to teach elementary school. I am also going back to the community college to get my Associate's degree in RN. I plan on working 2 12 hour shifts on the weekends while I teach during the week, and maybe some hours during the week as well. I would really like to become a travel nurse when my students are out of school on break and what not. Is it still possible to become a travel nurse if I only work part-time?
Thanks,
Terrence

Re: Part-Time Nurse

Wow, Terrence, that is an ambitious goal! More power to you in getting both an RN and a teaching degree. I have to say, though, my husband is a teacher and it is NOT an easy job. The hours look great on the surface, but he works a lot of overtime to get things done and keep up.

It depends some on what grade/subject you're teaching and whether you have grading to do. But you may find also that there are unspoken "standards" that other teachers in an elementary school will hold - and you may find yourself feeling stressed about not giving 110% like many teachers do.

It is also a pretty draining job, and it would be hard without weekends to decompress. I would urge you to try teaching for a year and see how it's going before jumping into both. I'm not a nurse (yet), but I would think nursing would be similarly demanding both emotionally and physically.

Good luck!
