how to maintain professional distance from patient

I am a first year nursing student and will be starting my first clinical rotation this summer. One of the issues that has come up in our lectures is how to maintain professional distance when caring for patients -- not to get so emotionally involved, but still be able to meet their needs.

Help! Need advice from experienced nurses.
