It depends. Where I work, we use "research-based" nursing practice. That means that the procedures we do/the policies that are written to back up the nursing practice at my hospital are based off of the research that is current. For example, if research were to indicate that IVs become infected on a fairly regular basis at 72 hours, despite aseptic site maintenance, then the policy at the hospital would reflect the changing of sites before that period of time. That is how research can be used. So, yes...it is useful in some ways. Also, we are looking to reduce the noise level in our unit right now and are using nursing research that looked at the negative effects of noise on the healing process and are using that information to guide our project and back up our interventions to promote staff buy-in.
