Re: Nurse pay

In New Orleans post Katrina my salary is presently about $33+ an hour. This rate is based on $28.25 hourly + shift diffs. I also get $400 monthly for student loan reimbursement and up to $2000 yearly for tuition reimbursement for my continuing BSN studies. I was an LPN from 1990-2005 and became a RN in Dec. 2005, so I was given ½ credit for my years of being a LPN. The hourly rates for RN agency nursing is around $40 now in New Orleans. The last rate that I received as a LPN was $18.65 hourly and I worked in an LTAC. I think we should all be quite open about our pay rates so because information is power and being informed will keep exploitation at bay.

Re: Nurse pay

Did you know you can drive a pepsi truck and deliver bottles and cans and make $38/hr...... nurses no matter what degree are not paid enough!! regardless of what specialty we are in, med-surg, ER, ICU, we are dealing with peoples lives. Of course we embarked on this journey set out to heal the sick because that's what's in our hearts, but we should be compensated for the level of care we provide to people.

Re: Nurse pay

nurses are paid a lot more than some jobs. For instance in my 4 year bachelors degree in Information Systems Technologies i was looking to start off around 28000-36000

Compare that with a LPN or RN who goes to school for a year or just two. I think its pretty good in my book plus a lot of room for advancement and increase in pay... not even mentioning travel nursing.

I think Nurses are doing pretty good in the pay department , they could do better but who couldnt?

Question Re: Nurse pay

Back 2 yrs ago, I had a patient that drove a garbage truck. He made 18.00 per hr! At the time, I was only making $23.00..at a specialty hospital (cardiac). I was working on tele puling sheaths, hanging blood, isolation patients with MRSA, diabetic patients with qhr FS's, changing out chest tubes, along with all the rest of nursing that goes with a medsurg floor...running my *(^ off and the uneducated guy in the bed was making close to what I was making...I'm glad for his family, but I was second guessing whether I'd made the right decision or not. As a 4 yr nurse, I think I did. It's not for the pay, it's for the purpose of being able to be there for someone, to be a blessing, when there is no one else. Pay does make a difference when you are writing out your bills. However, a million dollars doesn't mean a darn thing when someone is dieing right before you and you are responsible for their life. It's all in how you feel at the end of the day! At least when the day is done, I know that I worked for that money and deserve every cent. I wonder if some of the other workers in other industries can sleep on that feeling. Can the pepsi man say the same thing??
Doubt it. Nursing is not for whimps, pepsi is.

It's too bad that the health industry does not see it that way and pay us for what we are really worth. Perhaps eventually they will and perhaps they will not. We just have to remember that out blessings will be in heaven. You can hang your stethoscope on that!

Sincerely,
Mrs. ERnurse

I have seen opportunities advertised for nurses to come from other countries to the U.S., but does your agency also allow for American RNs to go overseas?
