The "only eight hours" motto is one I can take heart in

Long as you're willing to be flexible and travel a bit, there are a large number of facilities you can go to in my area at least (South Jersey/Philadelphia). When I'm working long term care, the shifts, workloads are more equalized. It's mainly in the hospitals, med/surg and Tele that I find myself getting the tougher assignments they dish out to agency nurses.

I've given up trying to persuade them that they money is only part of the equation, seems like that is the only aspect they care about and focus on.

wow, it is interesting to see the pay scales. Here in Canada for the most part, we are paid
RN around $ 25.00 an hour plus shift differential and benefits.
BSN around $35.00 an hour. plus
LPN around $23.00 an hour plus
Plus here you get paid a fair bit more if you work in the north, isolation pay.
in LTC the pay is around $18.00 and hour for both.
My sister is also a nurse and she was working for Telehealth Ontario, earning around $30.00.
So I guess our pay scale is not so bad.

brrrr they can have the isolation pay. I get calls for Alaska all the time I've told them NEVER Alaska. Maybe visit in the middle of summer but the 40's on a nice day is about my limit of comfort. I'll take 100 anytime. We're at a nice mid 70's this week.

I have never worked as an "agency nurse" nor am I interested in doing so. At the end of the year I am moving back to Perth Western Australia. I am looking forward to working as a RN in Australia again. It is a completely different environment. The nurses I worked with (and will be again) actually help each other out without *****ing about it. It really was a pleasant change of pace. It had to be the best nursing job I have ever had and I am so lucky to be able to go back

New LPN with no experience and I started working full time 3rd shift at a nursing home in Northern IL for $20/hr. (Base pay $19/hr + $1 shift diff.)

I think specialty nurses do tend to get paid more but there is a great deal of disparity by region. In areas where the cost of living is higher ie New York, Los Angeles.....The pay is higher - but salaries do seem to be lower in rural areas and in the mid and southwest. Someone told me in school that psych nurses got paid well but I wasn't really interested - Found my self working in a psych hospital quite by accident. I currently get $38/hr and work 8hr shifts with no mandatory overtime. Which works great when you have a small child at home. I like getting off work at the same time as my son gets out of school; plus I really like what I do as psych patients are really underserved when it comes to treatment options. So I would suggest Psych nursing - but it really helps to get some clinical experience first so you can differentiate organic vs psych dx on new patients.

Besides if you are going into nursing for the pay you might be dissapointed. I know a lot of disenfranchised nurses who thought the pay would be so much better. Plus you have to really like people and be flexible so as to deal with the human element of nursing.
