Not sure where to post this Really not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this. Ok I was talking to some of my nurse friends and we were talking about our pet peeves in nursing. Yes we all have them little quirks that we just cannot do no matter what. My big thing is I cannot handle anything that has to deal with the mouth...Yes I can't suction a patient without gagging and throwing up..yes as embarrasing as it sounds I have thrown up when I absolutely had no choice but to suction a patient...I don't do well with anything that comes out of the mouth. Another friend of mine can't deal with feet...Call it weird or whatever but we all have them..Dig deep and post the one thing that you absolutely cannot deal with when it comes to your role as a nurse.

Re: Not sure where to post this Raw hot emesis. . .never had a problem with it until that lady in CHF barfed up a whole intact bay leaf. My least favorite endevor is the foley catheter insertion on a 300lb, 70-something, female. O_S

Re: Not sure where to post this try the 300+# pregnant female that's 5' tall not sick just a reach. I don't care too much for those colostomy bag changes but much better now then with the ones I had to do when working oncology

Re: Not sure where to post this I have a couple of things that I "can't handle". One is severe facial trauma. I'm not talking about black eyes and split lips, I'm talking about faces half gone or brains hanging out - I CANNOT deal with that. The face is a part of the body that defines a person - I don't know, can't explain it. I could never work in a trauma center. I work in a rural ER, we usually don't get those kinds of cases, but every now and then when EMS cannot secure an airway, one will come to us for stabilization before being transfered. It is my worst nightmare!! I also have trouble with colostomys - I do them, but I will nearly hurl while doing it. AND I can certainly relate to a couple of the other posts, what is with, and I don't want to be crude, but this it what "my crowd" of nurses call it, "old lady crotch smell". It's not a pleasant activity, putting a foley into most elderly women - especially the heavier ones. I told my husband (he is in EMS), "if I ever start to smell that way, just shoot me!!LOL" Thanks for the humor, it's appreciated.
