No Night Nursing School?

At the age of 42 I have been taken by the passion of nursing. I finally know what I want to be when I grow up, a Nurse. To much disappointment, in my city, I have found that none of the colleges offer night school for nursing. Is that common everywhere? My degree in business makes it hard to understand there is a nursing shortage. I would think schooling would be quite flexible. There has to be many others in my situation. Ready, willing, and qualified people itching to get into nursing school, if only they could go to school and train in the evenings. Some people MUST work in the day, there is no other option. A zillion degrees can be earned in the evening at 100s of universities, as I have earned mine. Any input on why nursing school is different? Hmm, Did I just stumble upon something huge to help out the nursing shortage? Hoping to one day get accepted and enrolled into night nursing school, and become an RN.

Re: No Night Nursing School?

Hey,
I'm a nursing currently a nursing student. My take on when classes are is that it varies by school and location. I went to one school and transferred to another. Both schools were near to a major city. Are you near one? If not, maybe that is a reason for no night classes? So far, I haven't had any nursing classes at night, though in the fall I will have one. Almost all other classes I've taken were available at night. I would agree with you though, it'd make things easier if there were more nursing classes at night. From what I know though, a lot of people don't like teaching at night, and night classes are a LOT smaller than day. So maybe it's also a financial issues for the schools, considering there aren't toooo many nursing students. Also, most are traditional (right out of HS) so they probably don't see as much of a need for nursing night classes since for a lot of us we don't have other jobs/ a life. Hopefully that helped a little bit at least. Good luck finding some night classes!

My school was near a major city, and there were a few of us LPN to BSN students. No clinicals were at night, and just a couple of night classes. Bwaaaaah!

Re: No Night Nursing School?

I went evenings and weekends to get my Associate Degree in Nursing in Minneapolis at the College of St. Catherine. It was quite expensive but allowed me to work during the day. I graduated at age 37. These days, you could do many of your classes on-line. The U. of Phoenix seem to be marketing hard in this area.

Re: No Night Nursing School?

You can get most if not all of your pre-req's done at night going part-time. However, give that's there's not only a nursing shortage, but a shortage of instructors is probably the biggest reason why. Plus, you would have to have clinicals in the evening, which probably isn't the best learning experince. On the other hand having third shift clincials would be the most practical since most new grads end up working third or second shift right after graduation.
