In need of advice.

Hello all.

I need some advice.

I am going to graduate from Nursing School in December (Happy Day!!)
and I am trying to decide if I should work on the medical floor for a while because I am told that the medical and surgical floor give a person a good nursing foundation. Or should I just go straight into a specialized field such as the ER or to ICU. I have put out applications out to a few places and have recieved job offers in all areas.

To help you understand my dilemma better I am a veteran Paramedic and have worked in the ER prior. I really enjoy that area of medicine and would love to work on a bird at some point. However Nursing is a whole different monster from paramedicine.

Any advice you could give me would be great

Thanks

Wink Re: In need of advice.

Before Nursing I was an EMT and worked as an ambulance diver. I went straight from school into L&D Specialty. Didn't regret it at the time. But in my current position I do think more experience in general nursing would have been great. I would suggest at least 1 year of floor nursing as experience before getting into a specialty.

Just my thoughts

Peace and Namaste

Re: In need of advice.

If you are interested in ER/Flight nursing, I say go for it! In my experience, the new grads who do the best in the ER are the ones with EMT/Paramedic experience.
