    Has anyone done their homework?

I am starting nursing school on the 20th of this month. My mom keeps telling me different salary ranges for nurses starting out. Has anyone actually done the research or does anyone know the starting salary range for an RN fresh out of school?

    Thanks,
    Rachel

It really depends on the part of the country you are located in, the nursing shortage in your area.. One can't say exactly what a salary would be. And it could change by the time you graduate.. If you are going into nursing for money you might be disappointed. But you might love nursing and then it will be worth more than money.

I am by no means going into nursing for the money. I have always wanted to be in the medical field and decided that medical school wasn't for me. I am in the southeast part of the United States. I am attending school in Alabama, but plan to work in Florida after graduation in may 2006. Can someone just give me a ballpark figure because I actually have no clue at all.

    Hi Rachel!
I'm in Pensacola, FL. I've had different hospitals tell me different pays, but they all fall somewhere in between or around $16.50 and $20/hour. Most paid the same for all graduate nurses, but one hospital did pay $0.05 cents more per hour for a BSN. The rest the pay was all the same. There is a shift differential for the evening shift and night shifts.
For example, I still have an email from Sacred Heart Hospital here, the pay is there for a new grad nurse is $16.47 per hour IF you have NO prior hospital experience such as LPN or Patient care tech and there is a shift diff of $2.50 per hour evenings, 3.25 nights. So, days: 16.47 (7-3 shift) Evenings: 18.97 (3-11) Nights: 19.72. They are also offering a $5000 sign on bonus.

If you call the local hospital and ask to speak with the HR dept, they will usually give you information. Or you could look up the website for the hospital that you want to wokrk in and email them...that is what I did! You can also go to the Dept of Labor website and get more information.

    Hope this helps!
