Welcome!![]()
Greetings to all good nurses out there. My name is Dan and I have decided to become a nurse. I'm a 39 year old male, married 13 years to a wonderful woman and have 3 great kids ages, 11, 9, and 5.
Currently, I work in Information Technology. I originally started out in college with a pursuit in Kinesiology with the intent of going into sports medicine. Truth be told, I let my mother-in-law talk me out of it and now I regret it. This field is almost completely devoid of human interaction and I find myself loathing it a little more everyday.
Granted, I make great money for what I do. However, I find myself reading medical articles and taking every first aid class that comes down the pike because, basically, the medical field is my first love. My dad is a firefighter. My mother and uncles are either doctors or nurses.
In short, I want to get back to my roots and God-given talents to help people who need comfort or rehabilitation. Heck with this ones and zeroes business. It's just not me.

Welcome to the site! I wish you luck in school....how long until you may be able to take the actual nursing classes?
Hey...just a thought: there IS such a thing as Nursing Infomatics. You could also utilize the IT there someday.
Hope you drop by often.

Welcome, Dan! I was thinking the same as Cat... you should look into Nursing Informatics.
Post often!

Nursing Informatics...hmmm. I may not totally grasp the term. I have a friend/former co-worker who went to work for Texas Tech University - Health Sciences Center to do the Telehealth/Telemedicine conferences for them.
He architects the hardware and software together, then coordinates video conferences for Doctor visits from Lubbock, Texas to state prisons, where a nurse usually is present with the inmate. The nurse, inmate and the doctor speak to each other about the inmate's condition and/or give them a yearly check up. My friend is not a nurse, just the middle guy doing the tech stuff.
I suppose Nursing Informatics has more to with a Nurse being a bit more involved in the tech portion of things.
Or, am I way off? :33:
Nursing Informatics
Like any knowledge-intensive field these days, nursing is greatly impacted by the explosive growth of computers. Nursing Informatics is a broad ranging field that combines nursing skills with computer expertise. Jobs in this area might include a nurse programmer who writes or modifies programs for use by nurses; nurse communicators who work with other nurses to identify computer system needs, or to assistant in the training and implementation of those systems; informatics nurse managers who manage or administer information systems; or nurse vendor representatives who work for specific vendors to demonstrate systems to potential customers.

I know you want to get into the 'people portion' of Nursing; at least you know that your computer-ese would be valuable, too!
