| Re: Mandatory BSN? Lol, I'm sure that one day in the future most nursing schools are going to be four years long. At the school I'm at (Univ Of Central Oklahoma) it used to be four semesters, now it's five. I'm not sure, but I think that OU's (Univ of Okla) is even longer than ours. I think their two year program (year-round) is the accelerated program. |

| Member | Re: Mandatory BSN? Very true Cat. I am working on a Post Master's Certificate in Nursing Ed (my MSN is in Clin Spec) and many of my classmates are planning on teaching in the acute care arena because the academic setting pays so poor. In fact according to one of my texts, despite needing an MSN to teach in an university program the pay is no better and sometimes worse than that of the publice school system. It is seems like a no-brainer to me since we need faculty desperately. Also there is a new certification for educators but here again despite implying excellence in clinical nursing education it does nothing for those who take it financially. ~BeachyCEN The great aim of education is not knowledge but action. Things also boil down to the fact that Nursing has different hierarchies: LPN, ADN, BSN, etc. And, we have the PA's/MD's.....and we wonder why Health Care is in such a state of confusion?! |

Part of the problem is that a person can make more as a staff nurse (given years of practice) than a nursing instructor. Most of mine still work and teach to keep their skills up, and for extra pay. I wonder if other professional degree programs have this problem?
