Maintaining your own personal life?

So I'm just wondering, for those of you who regularly work evening or overnight shifts, do you find this gets hard with regards to maintaining your own personal/family life?

I'm not a nurse right now but am thinking of going to school for it. I've always been curious though how you would do it. If your husband worked days and got home as you were going to work, does it affect your relationship?

Re: Maintaining your own personal life?

from my own experiences, it is a challenge.
i am in nursing school and was also working 3 12's, nights. didnt leave much time for anything else and my 4.5 yr relationship eventually ended. i know of two other students now getting divorced, as well as 2 more on the edge of filing.

Re: Maintaining your own personal life?

I am married and work nights. My relationship has not suffered. It's all in how you balance you home & work life. When I have a few days off, I make sure that my husband and I spend a lot of quality time together. He does a lot of the cleaning & running errands while I am either at work or sleeping, so that we don't spend the time we do have together doing those things- so we can just spend time with each other on my days off. I don't have kids, so I might end up switching to days when we have kids, but for now, it's working.
