How Do You Combat Burn Out?

I am curious about this because just about everyone I know is battling burnout. What do you all do to keep yourselves sane? Do you consider yourself leading a balanced life? Hopefully this is not an issue for everyone, but if you have experience with it, I would appreciate your input.

    Thanks!

I haven't burned out but there are days I've also felt burned. I have changed specialities several times. I worked Oncology, Ortho/Neuro/Uro (uro doc didn't want his patients on m/s floor at that hosp so the came to ortho), surgical, peds (peds and O/N/U &/or surg at same time) then just peds then home health (with peds focus saw all the kids for 100 miles around) now LDRP. I do have lots of vacations though and work just the 3 days a week most of the time anymore.

I have burned out and almost lost my job in the ER. How many of you wanted to tell some patient what was on your mind? Well I did, not a good thin to do some times. I got 3 days off without pay to think about it.

    Burn Out:
You just cant organize your work.
You have mood swings at work and at home.
You drop things all the time.
You Lost That Loving Feeling towards you patients and family members.
    It effects your home life.
You just do not enjoy going to work.
You wake up 3-4 times a night(day) thinking about work.

If you do all or some of this, you have burned out. Time to move on to another position. I had all the symptoms above. Had to move on. Feeling Much better Now!!

You can get counseling from employee assistance program. Best thing to do is recognize that you are burning out and get help.

you sure you weren't pregnant My attitude is better when I remember I can't change other people for the most part and having jobs, insurance, soap, teeth etc aren't everyone priority.

Actualy to address your origenal post.

    To combat burn out:
    Take frequent vacations.
Understand the unit will live without you.
    Leave your work at work.
    Take frequent baths after work.
Take time out for your self.
