Question Licenses in more than one state

Hi All,

I am a newbie to online forums.
I have a quick question.
I hold a Maryland RN license and am currently practicing.
My license is currently active.

I was planning to move to Illinois for personal reasons.
I was getting ready to apply for an endorsement in the state of Illinois and obtain a license there.

My question is -
1. If i get my license in Illinois approved, will that automatically cancel my current Maryland license?
2. Are nurses allowed to practice in more than one state?
3. And are there any state-specific rules that would disable me hold licenses in both MD and IL states at the same time?

Thanks in advance

Re: Licenses in more than one state

Hi, harikris, and welcome to the site. In response to your questions:

1. If i get my license in Illinois approved, will that automatically cancel my current Maryland license?
2. Are nurses allowed to practice in more than one state?
3. And are there any state-specific rules that would disable me hold licenses in both MD and IL states at the same time?

1.) No. You've paid your money to MD, and that license is good.
2.) Yes; you may be licensed in more than one state.
3.) Not that I know of. However, if you have any 'problems', such as a drug addiction or court conviction, you would, of course, have to let the State of Illinois know.

Here is a link to the Illinois BON: Illinois Nurses - Ultimate Nurse We have Forums for all the States, and they have the appropriate links for their respective BON's.

By the way, Illinois will be requiring 20 CEU's every renewal period. And don't forget to let MD know when you move. Your best bet would be to keep up that license, too!
